Many people consider happiness to be a rare, brief or fleeting experience. We’ve all hopefully experienced those wonderful, take-your-breath-away kind of moments, where something happens that makes us insanely happy and no-one can wipe the smile off your face, right? Admittedly, those moments are usually quite rare – but I guess that’s what makes them so special.
However, I believe that you can find, create or experience happiness every single day of your life. By using some simple, fun strategies, you can start to find happiness in even the smallest and most insignificant moments of your day. Are you ready to find happiness? Then follow these simple steps and you’ll discover happiness lurking where you least expected it. Enjoy!
- Find happiness in everyday moments
Instead of looking for that ‘big-bang’ moment of happiness, why not search for happiness in your every day interactions? Think about the things and people that make you smile, or the gorgeous flowers in your office reception area. Perhaps it’s the talented street musician performing in the park…or children playing on the swings. There is real beauty and happiness in everyday things – we just have to open up our senses and perceptions to really enjoy and celebrate them.
It’s a simple thing to do, but smiling is powerful. It lets people know that you’re open and approachable, and that you have a positive outlook on life. The best thing about smiling is that it’s infectious. When you smile at others, they usually smile back. The act of smiling creates a virtuous circle of happiness.
- Focus on the positives
Making a conscious effort to focus your mind positively is a great way to increase your happiness. Instead of allowing negative or self-critical thoughts to invade your mind, work hard to re-frame them into positive thoughts. For example, if you’ve missed a doctor’s appointment, don’t berate yourself. Instead, accept that you’ve made a mistake and take positive action to rectify it. Focus on making a new appointment, rather than beating up on yourself for missing the original date. This strategy takes practice, but it really helps you to deal with life in a more positive and optimistic way.
- Invest in your personal relationships
This seems like an obvious thing to say, but it’s surprising how many of us neglect our friends, family and loved ones . Life is busy and we can sometimes get caught up in our daily routines and forget to make time for the people we care about. Investing in our personal relationships can be a rich and rewarding experience. Friends and family provide a safe and trusted space where we can share our fears, hopes and dreams. Our dear friends know us better than anyone else – they accept our faults and celebrate our successes and boost our self-esteem. So call them now – you’ll feel better instantly!
- See the funny side
Life can sometimes be awfully serious. The stresses, strains and worries of everyday life can cast long shadows over us. That’s why it’s important that we inject a little humor into our daily interactions. Perhaps there’s a funny video clip that always makes you smile? Or a photograph of a friend or loved one that reminds you of something fun or enjoyable? You might be lucky enough to have a colleague that shares your sense of humor – or someone else in your life who can make you laugh till your stomach hurts. They say that laughter is the best medicine – and I couldn’t agree more.
Why not try some of the activities I’ve suggested, and add your own strategies for happiness. Pay attention to what makes you happy – and you’ll attract more of it into your life.
