Taking time out can make a big difference to your happiness

surving 3 Taking time out can make a big difference to your happinessWhen was the last time you took time for yourself? Just to stop for an hour, ten minutes or even just five minutes in your own company, away from the stresses and strains of your life?

We all lead such busy lives these days, whether we are working a job and running a household or raising children at the same time as looking after an elderly relative, sometimes we need to stop and think of ourselves as well.  Just imagine you were so exhausted that you couldn’t do any of the things you need to do every day, who would do grandma’s shopping then?  Who would take the kids to cheerleading or football practice? Not only do we deserve a break sometimes, that little bit of ‘me’ time is essential for keeping our bodies working the way they are supposed to.

Stop! And smell the coffee.

This time to yourself doesn’t have to be a full-blown meditation session with candles and wonderful music, just disappear into your bedroom with a cup of tea and a book and read just one chapter.  Grab a couple of cookies and sit in the garden for ten minutes. Or maybe just stop the job you are doing and do something less stressful for a few minutes.

Maybe you could sign up for some yoga classes or something that has always interested you at your local health center.  Why not have a go at learning a new language or a craft activity that you’ve always fancied a go at.  Not only would this give you the opportunity to learn a new skill and meet new people, it also gives you a method of relaxation that you could do at home anytime you want to de-stress; practice a bit of that yoga, or that new instrument at home for a couple of minutes a day.

Taking an hour away from home while at the class gives you the opportunity to relax away from the stresses at home and think about something else, which will do wonders for you and give you something else to talk to your family about.  It could also give you a sense of pride in the new skill you have learnt, whether this is producing a finished article, such as a painting or a poem, or even being able to read the menu properly in a French restaurant. That sense of pride will give you a great feeling of happiness in what you have achieved.

Change those four walls if you can

Maybe you feel stuck in your surroundings which is draining you, why not put on your sneakers and go for a walk for a few minutes or even a run for a mile or two (if you feel fit enough).  The change in the scenery will give you a break as much as the difference to your normal routine.

It doesn’t matter how long this ’me’ time lasts as long as it gives you the opportunity to relax and unwind from the stresses of your normal life.  And this little break from your normal routine could be just a little step toward you achieving a happier life.

Choose happiness with a little relaxing now and then makes for loving life.  Go for it!

Debbie Dee
