We can often sit for a while looking at our photographs remembering the day that photo was taken. Perhaps it was a family birthday party or an imprompt night out with some friends.
These small snapshots of our past remind us of the feelings we had as that picture was taken and the time we spent with those people or on that vacation. That’s why we take them, as keepsakes of a happy time in our lives or to remind us of cherished friends and family.
But why do we enjoy it so?
Most people, according to a survey done in 2003, tend to remember the happy events more than the bad ones. Psychologists believe that this is for two main reasons; the first is because the good memories outweigh the bad, people look for positive experiences in their lives.
The second reason, they say, is pleasant memories take longer to fade than the bad ones. We try to minimize the effect of these bad memories on our lives so the brain gets rid of them faster than the good ones. When you look at those photos you automatically remember the good things that surround it.
Have a look at your photo albums, or that box of photo’s hidden away in the closet waiting to go into an album. Maybe you could dig that box out and start putting them into a few albums. I remember sorting through a big pile of photo’s a couple of months ago to try and do just that. I managed to create a couple of albums that are now proudly sitting on a shelf for all to see. The memories that came flooding back kept me smiling for hours!
Children can do the funniest things when they are small. Those silly things they did as little children stay with us for years afterwards. I have a friend whose son loved trains but he couldn’t say train so he called them a nonsense word that he made up himself. To this day my friend cannot see a photo of them all visiting a big steam locomotive without smiling and thinking of that silly word.
Sometimes a photo can remind you of something that isn’t in that photo. Maybe you have a photo of you in a favorite outfit at a party but when you look at that photo and see those clothes again you remember when you wore it on another occasion, visiting your old friend from out of town. The sight of that old outfit has triggered a happy memory.
Make the most of those memories.
These pictures are a trigger for our memories, so settle down in your comfy chair, pull out a couple of your best albums and reminisce your way to happiness.
