One of the most powerful weapons we have in our search for happiness are our senses. They help us gather information as we travel along life’s road. Let’s have a look at what each of our senses do to help become happier as we go through life.
Taste
Do you eat your meals in a rush? Squeezing in a plate of spaghetti before the next job in your day? Do meals resemble a battlefield in your house? Do you slowly enjoy each mouthful on your plate? In our hectic lives we can sometimes forget how enjoyable food can be. We are lucky enough to be able to enjoy foods from all over the world, to experience flavors our parents and grandparents could never dream of. Take your time with your evening meal tonight, plan something you really fancy, enjoy each flavorsome mouthful. If that’s not possible try and plan a special meal once a week, it will give you something to look forward to and keep you smiling to yourself.
Touch
Some people think we don’t touch enough. I love a hug with my loved ones to show them how much I value and appreciate them. Not only does this act of kindness make me feel good, it also can give them a boost, knowing that they are valued. Studies have shown that a 30-minute massage can help you overcome pain, boost your self-esteem and help you get rid of any stressful feelings.
Using your sense of touch doesn’t mean just touching each other. Touching things around you can lessen your stress levels and help you relax. Fabrics like silk and cotton can help you unwind, whether you wear them or have them as part of your furnishings.
Smell
Everybody has smells that make them smile. Maybe you like the smell of freshly cut grass or a home baked loaf of bread. Maybe your favorite smells are a little more unusual, I know some people like the smell of creosote when it’s just been painted on a fence. Our sense of smell sometimes triggers memories of where we know that scent from like roses remind you of grandma’s garden, or baby powder reminds you of bathing your children. Whatever the smell, the good ones can make us smile with pleasure when we smell them.
Hearing
Our ears can bring us so many pleasures! First of all there’s the sound of laughter, the sounds we hear as we wake from a good night’s sleep, like birdsong; or listening to your favorite music to bring a smile to your face and a cheer to your heart.
Many people find listening to books easier or more pleasurable than reading them. I have a daughter who likes to listen to a book rather than music when she has a long drive ahead of her. Getting involved in the story makes the time go so quickly the journey seems somehow shorter for her. One of the sounds I find most pleasurable is the sound of babies and toddlers laughing, it always makes me giggle whenever I hear it and cheers up my day whatever I’m doing.
Sight
Our eyes are another sense that can give us an overwhelming display of the enjoyable things in life. Wandering round a new place, you take in a whole array of new things to look at. Take time out in a garden to enjoy the flowers and plants in it. Just looking at the smile on a loved one’s face can make you smile just as widely. The world around us gives us lots of things for our eyes to drink in, take time out from your busy life and have a look around where you live or work. There are many things around us that are a pleasure to see we don’t always notice them.
Our senses are the most valuable thing we have. Let’s use them to their fullest to make our lives more pleasurable and get the most out of our lives to make them as happy as possible.
What do your senses do to help your happiness?

You may have not intended to do so, but I think you have managed to express the state of mind that a lot of individuals are in. The sense of wanting to help, but not knowing how or where, is something lots of us are going via.
Nice try when it comes to spamming. You say, “The sense of wanting to help,” Sorry but I was not talking about this. That is one BIG OOPS for you. Hope the link helps you.
Debbie

Well said, I could not agree more with you on this issue. I think your blog is very popular on this topic judging by all the other comments posted to it. I just wanted to leave a comment to appreciate your hard work.
Now lets be honest here. You didn’t leave a comment to appreciate my hard work, you left a comment to get a link back to yourself. Honest is always the best policy. OOPs on you.

I was looking for this the other day. i dont usually post in forums but i wanted to say thank you!
This isn’t a forum. Maybe they have night classes you can take when it comes to being a spammer, because you sure could use some help. If you are trying to look like a professional you really need some improvement. Sorry, I call them the way i see them.

” Yes boss! What you told here is absolutely right. Just one sight or touch can stimulate the happiness in you. Not in case of love too, but have you ever enjoyed rain at the fullest? … When it touches and flowing through the body we feel that all the sadness has been wiped out by nature itself. Love with all your five senses. God has gifted it with you to enjoy the surroundings and to live. Whatever you prefer to do, give yourself fully in to that and telling to yourself that you can enjoy and actually deserve to embrace the minute details that bring a smile and happiness in your daily work life! Try this am sure you are gonna experience an entirely new feeling like never before.”
I can tell that you are full of happiness. I really like this, “Just one sight or touch can stimulate the happiness in you.” This is very true. Also the minute details are very important. Sometimes people get so busy that they forget to enjoy the moment they are in. Thank you very much for your input. It is amazing what we can enjoy when we do recognize God in our lives.
Thanks again and may you always be blessed with happiness,
Debbie

Debbie – your posts always brighten up my day. Just yesterday morning I used my senses and didn’t even realize it until I read your post.
I went out to the truck to get ready to take my daughter to the orthodontist and it was earlier than when I usually leave. The birds were churping. The smell of spring was in the air. It made me feel good about life.
Thank for the reminders!
