How the secret to happiness can be in changing your habits?

how to change a habit How the secret to happiness can be in changing your habits? We all have habits that we could change for the better, I do anyway, don’t you?  Are you looking at your life in a positive way or negative way?  Has this become a habit?

We all know that attitude has a lot to do with happiness.  Something goes wrong during the day and we talk to ourselves and say, “Man that always happens to me.” Now what if you could change what you say when things don’t go right. Instead of “Man that always happens to me,” you would say, “Don’t know why that happened, but something good can come out of it, it always does.”

Happiness is a good habit and let’s face it unhappiness is a bad habit.

Just like exercising is a good habit and not exercising is a bad habit.

Eating healthy food is a good habit and eating unhealthy food is a bad habit.

When we are children we learn good habits from our environment and maybe not so good habits from our environment.

I know this first hand.  As I have talked before on self-esteem, my mother had low self-esteem, which she passed on to me.  It was a habit for me, in the fact that my self talk was on the negative side.  I was in the habit of saying, “I can never do that.”  By changing my habit I now say, “I can do that.” I have learned to change my habit of negative thinking into positive thinking.

Whether at work or at home, unhappiness can creep in by our habit of reacting to any given situation.

Here is a list of 5 habits I have found that can bring happiness to a sudden stop:

  1. I got on the scale this morning and I just weigh too much.
  2. This traffic is driving me nuts.
  3. These kids are really messing up my day.
  4. I wish my partner would help out more.
  5. When is this day going to come to an end?

You are probably wondering why I call these habits.  These are things that happen in life and the habit comes in with our reaction to them.  If you are reacting in a negative way to these daily trials you have created a habit in your behavior.

This is what you would say if you changed your habit of thinking about these situations in a positive way.

  1. This scale doesn’t say what I want it to, but I can work on that to bring my weight down.
  2. Traffic is a mess, but it gives me time to organize by thoughts and day.
  3. These kids are really acting up today, but hey I’m up for a challenge.
  4. Maybe if I showed my partner how I appreciate (him or her) more I would get more help.
  5. It was a rough day, but there is always tomorrow.

Wouldn’t it be nice to learn how to change our reacting to our environment by changing our habits?  This can be done in a very simple way.

Scott Young has written about this in “How to Change A Habit”.

He breaks down changing habits in a very simple way.

I have learned to change some of my habits to find my happiness, but after reading what Scott Young says, he sure makes changing your habits much easier.  I was doing it the hard way all these years.
