We all need a little pick-me-up from time to time, and sometimes it’s easy to neglect our health and emotional wellbeing if we are busy.  However, nature provides us with an incredible range of mood-boosters that it’s worth taking advantage of before we reach for the wine!

Here are some great mood-boosting tricks to get you back to Happy…

Eat chilli to enhance your mood and go from sad to happy

It may sound crazy, but did you know that chilli peppers actually boost happiness levels?  Studies have shown that eating a good dose of hot chilli works as a natural anti-depressant, by boosting serotonin levels in your body. Serotonin is the happy chemical in all of us that gets boosted when we hug someone, stroke a dog, or have a good laugh.  Next time you feel down, grab a curry and get smiling again!

Step out in to the sunshine for a great pick-me-up

Sunshine makes people smile – it’s a fact!  People’s moods are enhanced during the lighter warmer months, and we all like to get out there and enjoy great weather.  If you are feeling a little weary and low, getting a good blast of sunshine really works to perk you up. Life is better when the weather is great, so use this natural resource to boost your mood.

Sleep on it

How many times have you thought to yourself, ‘I’ll sleep on it? Things will look different tomorrow’. This is because when we sleep, we recharge our batteries and work things through. Being tired really makes it tough for you to tackle problems, and sometimes a good sleep is all it takes to get back to Happiness.  When we dream, we process issues and problems in our subconscious, giving us tools and resources to gain perspective and sort things out when we wake up again.

Use color to give your senses a boost

Did you know that different colors can make us feel different emotions?  Blue is calming and relaxing, and yellow makes us feel happier. Red is a rousing color which stirs our senses, and white makes us feel peaceful. The next time you are feeling a little low, try changing your clothes.  Steer clear of blacks and greys, and be adventurous with bright patterns and lovely colors.

Exercise at least once a day

Have you ever experienced that natural high that comes half way through a strenuous exercise routine?  That’s the point when our body gets pumped full of endorphins – happy chemicals – and starts to respond to the gift you’ve given it. Our bodies are there to be used, and nothing boosts mood as well as a good brisk walk, run or swim. Just try being depressed when you’re jogging – I bet you can’t!

Experiment with scent

Just like colors, different scents have the power to make us feel different emotions.  Look in to essential oils and aromatherapies and discover the amazing power of smells.  Use citrus smells like orange and lemon to energize you, or rosemary and lavender to relax you.  A great scented candle or oil burner can flood your home with beautiful smells that rally the senses and boost your mood without you even noticing!
