"Imagine" and Your Happiness will Follow

There’s an old saying out there – ‘Put your request out to the universe, and the universe will answer it’. I thought about this idea last week, when a friend of mine got in touch and told me her story.

When my friend was 16, she discovered John Lennon’s music and fell in love with it. She heard ‘Imagine’ for the first time, and over time the song began to have special meaning for her. She used to play the song when important milestones were taking place, and even chose it for her mother’s funeral. While my friend obviously invested a lot of personal emotion in to the song, it seemed as if over time it had a special meaning for her. When she was sixteen, she actually got the word ‘imagine’ tattooed on her back, as a permanent reminder of everything that was good in the world, and to have hope that she would always be happy.

When ‘Imagine’ used to play, my friend got a feeling of certainty and safety about things. She used to think that when it came on the radio, something good was going to happen. So strong was this conviction, that her fiancé actually burned a copy of the song on to a CD, and wrapped it with a personal player and the message ‘play me’ on the morning of their wedding! This gave her the courage and belief that she was doing the right thing, and her nerves completely disappeared as the song started to play in her ear.

Over time, my friend grew up a little and moved on from her early love of The Beatles. Her musical tastes changed. She had the tattoo removed, thinking that it was just a whim from her youth.

My friend is now 34 and has been trying to conceive for a while, now. She has always wanted children and so far has not had any luck. She did a test the other morning, which came back negative. She felt distraught. As she was sitting there having a good cry, ‘Imagine’ came on the radio and filtered in to her consciousness. She looked up and stopped crying. It was as if the universe were giving her a message that everything was going to be fine; that something good was going to happen. She hadn’t heard the song for months, and yet here it was, giving her a very personal, wonderful burst of reassurance.

My friend has never specifically asked the world to deliver what she wants. She hasn’t prayed, or turned to religion to achieve her aims. However, it was as if at that moment, the universe handed her the one thing she wanted in the world – reassurance, and the ability to smile again.

I don’t know what the outcomes to my friend’s situation will be. I just know that life is kind, and we need to be able to see those little messages that are just out there for us, to make us happy, regardless of what we believe, or who we are.

Do you have a song which holds special importance to you, and helps  ” Get You to Happy?” Let me know what it is!

Ray let me know when you find it and what you think of it. I do understand that ever song hits a one person different then it does another. When I need something to really get me motivated, just put one some Bruce Springsteen and I am goooo to go.

    Thank you Jen and Debbie!

Imagine is a lovely song… I find that music (the right kind of music) can have a very soothing and peaceful effect… sometimes even encouraging relaxation amidst chaos…

I like the Beatles and Louis Armstrong for this… but everyone will have their own favorites.

It seems like another powerful step, to recognize God/Universe/Spirit/Tao/etc. speaking to us through the music or anything else that arises in life… knowing that regardless of what people say… the Infinite Power that gave birth to life continues to hold you up and love you no matter what…

    Nothing short of amazing!

    keep smiling,

    • Debbie Bills says:

I like this, “The Infinite Power that gave birth to life continues to hold you up and love you no matter what.” This is so true. There is a reason that some people were given the talent to write these songs that give us that lift when we need it. It is amazing how one thing leads to another. Thank Ben
      You keep the smiles too

For me it is the smell of kerosene. I love to travel, so I got to smell it quite a bit. But when I just smell it in the air around the airport, I know something is coming up. A place I always wanted to see, relatives I haven’t seen for a long time, or just getting back home again.

Smell of kerosene. That’s cool. Between what we see, what we hear or what we smell, isn’t it neat how it can bring great memories. Thanks Tom that is really a great story. I like how you say, “I know something is coming up.”

Thanks Cheryl from Jen and I. Jen does express the need for music very well. It can really change our mood in one instant or bring back a wonderful memory.
Don’t you agree that Jen has a way of making the words dance on the page like she says she can do.?
Yes, it is very important to always honor and listen to that inner voice. Thanks again Cheryl.

What a brilliant and moving post!

To Cheryl’s point – for me there’s the sound of someone’s voice and every time I hear it … it makes me feel extremely safe.

      Hi Krizia,

I can go alone with you when it comes to the sound of someones voice. If there is something that is really bothering me when I hear the sound of hubby’s voice it just calms me. So I truly understand where you are coming from on that.
      Thanks for the reminder,

  12. Hi Debbie and Jen,

Great post! John Lennon’s “Imagine” is one of my favorite songs of all time. It gets down to the basic premise that we can make the world we want by imagining it and then doing something about making our imagination a reality.

A lot of my life has been driven by musical inspiration. I’ve played piano since age 6, clarinet starting at 10, and now I sing many different songs at karaoke. There are so many songs and so many great artists out there that I can’t pick an absolute favorite. Different music seems to suit different moods and different emotional needs. One of my favorite bands of all time is Heart. They write most of their own music and they are very talented. Most of what they write speaks to me in some way, but so do many other artists.

It’s great that your friend has something that anchors her to being okay. I can’t say I have a song that does that, though a large number of other songs will improve my outlook at least somewhat.

  14. rob white says:

    Hi Debbie & Jen,
Yes indeed, the power of music and words are an empowering tool. Nothing inspires our mind and advances our progress like a parade of uplifting thoughts. John Lennon is one that does it for me – the power of such conduits is they allow us to say YES to ideas that have us contemplating our ‘unlimitedness’…. and our best guides to action are thoughts that encourage our unlimited nature.

    • Debbie Bills says:

Yes, Rob, it is amazing what the power of music and words can do to empower us. Now if you want to stifle your thoughts listen to the wrong music. However I do realize everyone has certain music that can really get those juices flowing. John Lennon is one that does that for me also.
      Jen and Debbie
