Defeat Your past Regrets and Grab Hold of Your Happiness

By Debbie Bills

Personally this can be hard to do sometimes. With work it can be don’t.

When you have regrets from the past you clearly have to take a look at them and see the positive side of where they have lead you.

regret 1 Defeat Your past Regrets and Grab Hold of Your Happiness

Choose Happiness , not Regrets

Obviously most people look at failure as mistakes.  Guys get over this failure thing; failures are learning experience not mistakes.  I cannot even began to tell you how make time I have messed up trying to build my website and blogging business.

Starting a new business

When I started this business I had gotten fired from my job at an auto dealership.  No I did not get laid off, I just plain got fired. Why because of new management and I knew more than the new manager about my job.  In turn she had to bring in her own friend for my job, so she looked better.  It certainly was not a good ending and by the time the unemployment hearing was finished they definitely raked me over the coals good. (Actually I have thought of writing a book on “Surviving the worst unemployment hearing possible.”) I won the unemployment hearing, but it took 89 pages of transcribe to do this.

Anyway I tried to get another job, but that was hopeless. It was apparently clear that the new manager had pretty much black balled me in the work force.   I certainly have to admit thought working for someone else again and taking a chance of going through that again, scared the crap out of me.

After going through my options my hubby and I thought maybe we should build and run a wedding venue place.  We ultimately had a business plan made and formed a company.  Then I realized that this wasn’t a passion of mine, I was only doing it, because that is what other people thought I should do.  There I was back to square one again.

One day it just came to me that I wanted to do a website based on happiness. Personally from everything I had experience in life, I was happy and I wanted share my learning experiences.  I had not done any writing before other then dairies and journals.  I was terrible in English, but hey I had a lot to share and talk about.

Happy T-shirts didn’t work

To sum it up I have been working on this website since 2005, started out with the idea of doing happy t-shirts and obviously it has evolved into blogging.  Now I could look at all the mistakes or as people would call it failures, but instead I choose to clearly look at it as learning experiences.  I cannot afford to look back and question some of the mistakes I have made.  I have learned from those choices and my business is growing and I have grown as a person.

Do I have any regrets from the past 7 years?  No I do not, because I look at the good that has come into my life since then.

Looking on the bright side of regrets

Right before I got fired we had our first grandchild born.  Because I wasn’t working I could babysit for my daughter and get to know this adorable baby girl better.  I have been able to try my hand at my own business, which if I had not been fired I would have just stayed there working for someone else until who knows when.  Financially things have been tighter for me and my hubby, but we have learned to work together better because of this.  Our relationship has grown.

What I am saying is rather than having regrets about the past look at it and really concentrate on the positive in those regrets. Make some lemonade.   One thing I have learned is that when one door closes a better door opens up.  When we hold onto the past that new door cannot be opened.

Don’t let those regrets from the past take away the present and your future.  Choose to be happy and build on those regrets; make them work for you, instead of against you.

“The past is lessons to learn; the present and future are opportunities to practice those lessons.”

What  regrets do you need to get rid off?

Let’s Choose to be Happy,
Debbie

    Hi Debbie,

I agree, we never know what something that looks like a setback right now might brings us in the future, and most of the times, when we see things with a positive mind, we realize it was for the better, not the worst.

It is fun to see back in time what happened in our lives and how the different situations led us to what our lives are now.

    You’re awesome Debbie!
Thanks so much for your vulnerability to share with us your personal regrets.
I know what it feels like to make mistakes… and then to mercilessly hold onto them.
It is indeed a “skill” to discover HOW to authentically let these regrets go.

Man, though I gotta tell you… when we can really let this stuff go and embrace our humanity… well, everything just gets better. We feel lighter, happier and can add to our well of wisdom.

All experience is meant to teach us.
Here’s to learning and loving as we go through life!

Thank you Susan. You are right learning and loving are the key. And one does feel so much better when they can put the past to rest.

It is like a spring day arriving after a cold snowy winter.
You have a wonderful week and may you be showered with happy blessing.
