Choose To Be Happy; Under Any Situation!

By Debbie Bills

In my last post I was talking about the REAL PATHWAY to happiness.  I found myself in this situation during the Christmas and New Year season.  My happiness within was clearly put to the test big time and I did come out on top.

Let me explain a little history.  My lovely husband, God bless him is on this kick of wanting to retire.  I can really understand this, but one cannot get obsessed with something that isn’t going to happen for a few years and let it take away your daily happiness.  After all it’s not like he is 65 years old.  He has a little ways to go, yet.  I do understand his wanting to retire and all that, but I refuse to let his fears destroy my happiness on a daily bases.

Here is my story: happiness and save money

Before Christmas he told me that he had put back $600.00 for Christmas shopping.  I being the good shopper that I am spent $589.00 of that.  Don’t laugh at least I didn’t go over the $600.00.

When the credit card bill came in he said, “That is not what I said.” (Guess I’m going to have to get myself a tape record to record what he says and play it back for him next time.)

To make a long story short all through the holiday all I heard about was the money I spent on Christmas. How we couldn’t afford this.  I definitely gave this some thought and came up with this:  If he thought we couldn’t afford $600.00 for Christmas I really felt sorry for him. After all it is not like we are living check to check or living beyond our means.   He has a good job, money in saving and retirement.  Oh, yes we have taken some hits with the economy in the shape it is in, but we are more fortunate then many people.

I sat back and let him have is pity party and I decided to enjoy the holidays.  He clearly was not going to mess up my enjoyment and happiness. (Took a few drinks once in awhile, but I had a good holiday)

In my last posting “Choose Happiness, The Real pathway”, I had a comment from Susan Liddy from Secrets to Ultimate Living and she states that; “Don’t always have the external encouragement to feel happy today and in those moments, I decide to create happiness myself.”  Now this is a lady that obviously knows about happiness.  Good for you Susan.

This is exactly what I did during the holidays. I choose to be happy by creating my own happiness. I let him feel sorry for himself realizing that this fear was his fears not mine.  I kept myself busy with preparing for the holidays and enjoying the family.  (By the way they all enjoyed their gifts.)

Other people are out there trying there hardest to take away our happiness within on a daily bases.  It is our reaction to them that can get the job done or we can choose to be happy and not react to their actions and attitude. When you come upon this situation feel sad for the other person and their fears.  Don’t get angry with them; because the anger is going to clearly take your happiness away.  Personally I like staying happy and hoping my happiness within might rub off on them and help them to become a happier person.

Please leave your comments on how you kept your holiday happy.  Would love hearing them!

Hoping that you all are blessed with a wonderful New Year!

P.S. My mother-in-law told me I should go out a buy a new couch and then he would have something to complain about.
